What is Extensive Reading?
Extensive reading is a course taken by all third year junior high and first year high school students. Students in this course read lots of easy books and then take short quizzes on those books. Fujimigaoka has a large library of English books for this class that are marked based on the book's level. The books range from level 0 through level 9* and students are encouraged to choose their own level based on what they can read quickly and easily. By reading lots of books at an easy level, students are able to begin to read more quickly and increase their 'sight' vocabulary - that is, words that they see and immediately understand without having to think or translate back into Japanese in their heads. They also develop an innate sense of proper English grammar. So they are studying without feeling like they are studying!
*Returnee students read authentic novels rather than graded readers on the 0 through 9 scale. Rather than taking quizzes on books, returnee students write book reports on the books they read during class. |
